Our Initiatives

DEFY is developing programs and initiatives to defend educational freedom and keep partisan politics out of our nation’s classrooms.

  • DEFY partnered with OSUN over the Summer to bring college courses that are under threat of being censored to New College students, available for college credit, with some courses taught by New College faculty. We have since worked with other alumni to develop this into Alt New College. Learn more about our summer courses.

  • DEFY Talks is a speaker series on defending academic freedom and building social movements. Produced for New College (and the world) in partnership with Bard College and Open Society University Network (OSUN) a network of 45 Academic Institutions dedicated to Academic Freedom. Watch DEFY Talks and learn more HERE.

  • DEFY is organizing to help mobilize 1 million young voters before the 2024 election. We are partnering with organizations like the Andrew Goodman Foundation to make voting more accessible for students. What is happening in Florida is a reminder that elections have consequences, and we need to mobilize an army of educated and informed voters to fight back.

  • Support a Legal Defense Fund organized by NCF Freedom who have launched a law suit against Florida for attacking academic freedom.

  • DEFY is built around storytelling and will give a platform for students, parents, faculty and allies to tell their personal stories, leveraging social media to give them a platform to defend educational freedom.

  • DEFY will support non-violent acts of civil disobedience to protect faculty tenure and academic freedom in Florida and in America.

  • As we build our movement, we will be working with advisors to identify specific legislative and policy goals. We will be keeping an eye on local school boards and elections, as well as state and national legislative overreach, to keep partisan politicians and their politics out of our public schools and classrooms.
